Malaysia Must Build Sustainable Self-Reliant Innovative System - Minister MAH

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia must build a sustainable self-reliant innovative system to become a fully-developed nation in the regional and global economic landscape, said Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry. In a statement Tuesday, newly-appointed Minister Mah Siew Keong said the innovation agenda remained as the key-driving factor in Malaysia's next five-year plan (2016-2020) as one of the game-changers to spur the country's growth. "The strategies of the 11th Malaysia Plan are targeting both the enterprise and society levels to sustain economic growth and improve societal well-being, while improving collaborations among all stakeholders. "The focus is on strengthening relational capital to foster stronger linkages, collaboration and trust among stakeholders, instead of previous efforts which focused primarily on national-level initiatives," he said. The statement was issued following Mah's participation in a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2016 in Tianjin, China. Malaysia was ranked 20th out of 144 countries under the Global Competitiveness Index and 32nd out of 141 countries in 2015 due to efforts in strengthening the innovation ecosystem. --BERNAMA
