Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board To Increase Area For Pineapple Cultivation

JOHOR BAHARU (Johor, Malaysia), Jan 11 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) will increase the cultivation of the crop in the country by planting 8,500 hectares with the MD2 variety over a five-year period. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industries, Nogeh Gumbek said the US$23.31 million (RM102.6 million) project under the 11th Malaysia Plan, is in line with efforts to meet the high export demand for pineapples. "Of the 8,500 hectares, a total of 3,500 hectares will be developed in Sarawak, making the state the highest producer of the fruit in the country. The remaining 5000 hectares will be spread among a few other states in the peninsular," he added. He told reporters this after attending a briefing on the proposed cultivation at Wisma LPNM, here Sunday. Also present was LPNM director-general, Sahdan Salim. Nogeh said the pineapple market was stable at present and in this regard, production needs to be increased to attain higher sales and also meet the demand of importers. "The export market for pineapple hybrids such as the MD2 is expanding fast and we need to take the opportunity to become the country meeting the global market demand. "The MD2 has high demand in overseas markets as China, South Korea and Japan," he added. -- BERNAMA
