Malaysia's Halal Products To Make Inroads Into China's Qinghai Province

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's halal products, worth an estimated RM50 million (about US$16 million) a year, are expected to make inroads into China's Qinghai province by the middle of next year, said Minister of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry. He said the province, in the northwest of China, would be the entry point for halal agro-based frozen food and cosmetics to other provinces like Xinjiang and Ningxia. "Currently, there are 12 million Muslims in Qinghai, with six million in the capital, Xining. There are vast potentials for Malaysian halal products to penetrate the province and surrounding areas. "Initially, the products would be sold at Beijing Hualian Hypermarket Co Ltd's hypermarket in Xining. The group has 106 hypermarkets in China," he said at a media briefing here Wednesday. Ismail Sabri said this after witnessing the signing of the memoranda of understanding between Hikmah Marketing and Consultancy Sdn Bhd and three firms from Qinghai province here Wednesday. He said Beijing Hualian hypermarket would allocate 3,000 sq ft of space to promote the halal products from Malaysia. Meanwhile, Hikmah director, Mohd Ismail Ibrahim, said the company has started to export the halal products to the province. "The packaging experts and merchandise manager of Beijing Hualian Hypermarket are in Malaysia to offer advice to ensure the goods meet the needs of the Muslims in China," he said. He said the products could not be compared with those from Europe, New Zealand and US which were well-established. "With the halal status, Malaysian products can penetrate the Chinese market, especially among the Muslims. From there, we can spread out," he said. -- BERNAMA
