Malaysia's MATRADE Organises Gaming And Animation Mission To Japan

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 19 (Bernama) -- Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), the national trade promotion agency is continuing its effort to promote the export of Malaysian video games industry by organising an export acceleration mission (EAM) on creative multimedia and content to Japan in conjunction with the Tokyo Game Show 2018 from Sept 18-23. With the support of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the mission is aim at ensuring a consistency in promoting Malaysian companies producing games-related products and services. “This EAM is set to match our local gaming talents with global technology players, particularly from Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. “Twelve Malaysian creative multimedia and content companies will be housed under a Malaysia Pavilion, including Agmo Studio, Gamehubs, Glow Production and Lemon Sky Animation,” Chief Executive Officer Dr Mohd Shahreen Madros said in a statement. He said Malaysia was currently the leader of intellectual property (IP) creation in Southeast Asia and regional outsourcing destination for animation and video games. “It is the country’s aspiration to build local games capacity and capability so Malaysia could strengthen the IP creation segment. Ultimately, we hope to have a strong pool of talents that can work on international projects,” he said. The Tokyo Game Show, one of the key events in the video game industry, has proven to be a platform of choice for top Japan digital entertainment corporations such as Bandai and Sony. Last year, MATRADE led a similar mission to the event participated by 14 Malaysian companies representing a various market segment of video game ecosystems such as CGI and 3D game modelling, game development outsourcing and animation to major Japanese digital entertainment corporations. The participation last year generated US$30.85 million (RM127.92 million, US$1 = RM4.14) in sales. In 2017, Malaysian digital content industry generated revenue of RM7.9 billion of which RM1.42 billion was attributed to export, mainly on the outsourcing of video games and animation development. -- BERNAMA
