Mangoes To Cost More In India Due To Low Output & Rising Exports

By M.Saraswathi NEW DELHI (India), April 16 (Bernama) -- Mango lovers in India may have to fork out more for the national fruit due to short supply as a result of a 20 per cent drop in production coupled with rising export orders. "Mango production across India, in all likelihood, will remain about 15-20 per cent lower than last year's 18 million tonnes," the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) Secretary-General, D.S. Rawat said. Exports are likely to remain muted this year as well, he said. "Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh which together account for about two thirds of India's total mango production have recently witnessed nature’s wrath owing to unseasonal rains," noted an analysis conducted by the Agri-business council of Assocham. The weather condition coupled with hailstorm damaged over 50 per cent of the crop which was likely to hold up mango arrivals resulting in upward spiralling of prices, it said. Clocking a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of over five per cent, the production of mangoes across India has increased to 18 million tonnes in 2012-13 from 13.9 million tonnes in 2007-08. Exports of mangoes from India have grown at a CAGR of over 27 per cent during the past three years, to over Rs26,700 lakhs (US$44.3 million) as of 2012-13 from about Rs16,400 lakhs (US$27.21 million) in 2010-11. "This has had a significant impact on domestic demand of mangoes thereby leading to a rise in their prices," it added. The United Arab Emirates is the top most export destination for India's mangoes accounting for over 61 per cent of export followed by the United Kingdom (12 per cent) and Saudi Arabia (five per cent). Qatar, Kuwait and Bangladesh are other leading export destinations for Indian mangoes. About 1,300 varieties of mangoes are grown across the world and India alone cultivates over 1,000 varieties of the fruit. --BERNAMA
