MDeC: Malaysia Poised To Be Regional, Global Creative Contents Hubs

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is set to be the regional and global hubs for the creative contents industry in the next four years, says Multimedia Development Corp (MDeC). Its chief executive officer, Yasmin Mahmood, said the country has a lot of potentials in the creative contents sector, especially in animation. "Over the years we have developed over 330 companies active in multimedia contents in terms of animation, special effects, visual effects and games under the Multimedia Super Corridor Malaysia," she said. She said this after the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Bandai Namco Studios Singapore and Lemon Sky Animation Sdn Bhd here Friday. Lemon Sky chief executive officer, Cheng Fei Wong and Bandai Namco CEO/president, Nakatani Hajime signed the MOU. Yasmin said planning has already started and MDeC was going to develop the ecosystem by bringing in big industry drivers like Bandai Namco to collaborate with local players. "Currently, there are 330 active creative multimedia contents companies and more than 50 Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC)-status companies involved in activities related to games development. The creative multimedia companies in MSC recorded US$1.82 billion (RM6.39 billion) in revenue in 2013, and created over 10,000 jobs, said Yasmin. She said Malaysia has a lot of success stories in animation, like in the case of Upin Ipin which attracted a mass audience in Indonesia. "This is a testament to the growth of the Malaysian creative contents industry into a world-class creative hub, and now with the collaboration with Bandai Namco Studios Singapore, our local company will soon attract the Japanese market," she said. Under the MOU, Bandai Namco and Lemon Sky Games would kick of with a new series of projects next year, as well as develop a string of Bandai Namco titles for the coming year. Bandai Namco Games Inc, an arcade, mobile and home video game publisher, based in Japan, has produced popular video games franchises such as Pac-man, Tekken, Naruto, Soulcalibur, Dragon Ball and many more. --BERNAMA
