MegaFon has signed a memorandum with Huawei to create and develop 5G in Russia

MOSCOW, November 19. /TASS/. Russian mobile operator MegaFon has signed a memorandum of understanding with Chinese producer Huawei to tightly cooperate in the creation and implementation of new fifth generation (5G) networks in Russia, the operator said in a press release Wednesday. The main task of the 5G networks will be the expansion of spectrum of the used frequencies and their capacities. The new technology is expected to improve the efficiency of the network infrastructure. Thanks to a large capacity, the 5G technology will reduce load and delay of signal transfer in the network. Subscribers will be able to watch video, for example, without waiting for downloading of a file. MegaFon said that the memorandum will enable Russian specialists to take part in the creation of the connection standard and influence its technological peculiarities on the basis of the Russian telecommunications market, frequencies and landscape. Huawei will take into account MegaFon’s recommendations in testing of pilot equipment of the new standard. “MegaFon is today a leader in mobile data transfer in Russia…Thanks to the agreements, Russia will be one of the first countries where the mobile connection of the new generation will emerge. It’s especially important that it will happen on the eve of the 2018 World Cup soccer tournament,” Mikhail Dubin, MegaFon’s executive director for business development on mass market, said. The World Cup will be held in 11 Russian cities of the country at 12 stadiums. Ryan Ding, CEO of the Carrier Network Business Group at Huawei, said that 5G liquidates barriers in communication between people and devices. Huawei reached significant progress in the 5G development, and the 2018 World Cup is a unique platform to demonstrate the company’s leadership in this sphere. Read more
