Ministry Increases Aquaculture Investment Target To 35 Pct

Jakarta, Aug 27 (Antara) - The Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry has set itself a target to step up investment in the aquaculture sector by 35 percent in 2014, noted Director of Aquaculture Business Tri Haryanto. "We are set to increase investment in the aquaculture sector from 30 percent or a total value of Rp23 trillion in 2013 to 35 percent this year," Haryanto stated during the Indonesian Aquaculture 2014 event themed "Aquaculture for Business and Food Security" here on Tuesday. He noted that in order to achieve the target, the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry is promoting shrimp cultivation as a flagship marine commodity. Haryanto explained that besides shrimp, seaweed is also another flagship marine commodity that should be developed. In his opening address at the inauguration of the Indonesian Aquaculture 2014 event, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sharif Cicip Sutardjo remarked that aquaculture business activities have become an integral part in the life of the community. "It is because majority of the fish cultivation efforts can be done with a relatively small capital and simple technology on marginal land such as a house yard," the minister pointed out. He added that aquaculture also arguably holds greater potential than capture fishing, and therefore, it has become a primary alternative as a community business.
