MRT Purple Line to be operational in August

BANGKOK, April 16 (TNA) -- Mass Rapid Transport Authority of Thailand (MRTA) asserted that that the Purple Line electric train line (Bang Yai-Tao Poon) will be fully operational in August, according to the Government Spokesman. Maj Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said MRTA and the Transport Ministry will start running the rail system on a trial basis in May. People will be allowed to travel free of charge in June and July, he said. The Bang Yai-Tao Poon rail system, part of the so-called Purple Line, is designed to improving urban communication and easing traffic congestion. According to Maj Gen Sansern, there will be 16 stations with the total distance of 23 kilometres from Bang Yai to Tao Poon stations. It is estimated that 120,000 passengers would use the system daily during the first year and fares start from 14 baht to the maximum of 42 baht, he added. (TNA)
