Myanmar-Thailand to jointly invest in fishery sector

SAMUT SONGKRAM, THAILAND, May 17 (TNA) - The Thai private fishery sector eyes to jointly invest with its Myanmar counterpart, aimed to help solve the problem of a shortage in fishery products. A Thai private fishery delegation in Bangkok's neighbouring Samut Sakhon and Samut Songkram Provinces, headed by President of the Fisheries Association of Thailand Mongkol Sukcharoenkana, in his capacity as Chief of Samut Songkram's Chamber of Commerce, led a visiting Myanmar fishery delegation, including U Hla Than, Chief of Tanao Si's Fishery Association and Myeik Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Council, as well as other individual business operators, to visit the Mae Klong Market, wellknown for its freshest seafood products in Thailand on May 16, to explore opportunities for joint investment in the fishery sector. Mongkol told reporters that Myanmar's fishery industry in Tanao Si and Myeik has potential to jointly invest with the Thai side in a fishing production base in Myeik to export seafood products to Thailand in order to solve the problem of a shortage of seafood supply in the Thai market. On the occasion, the Thai private fishery sector urged the government to upgrade the Singkhon temporary border checkpoint in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province in the Upper Thai South to become a permanent checkpoint to facilitate expanding border trade and investment between Thailand and Myanmar.
