New Cabinet Must Move On With Greater Unity, Says ASLI

By Farhana Poniman and Nurul Hanis Izmir KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- The new Cabinet line-up must move on with greater unity to achieve the country's goal of becoming a developed nation by 2020, said Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (ASLI). ASLI Centre for Public Policy Studies Chairman, Ramon Navaratnam said achieving the country's goals was not dependent on any Cabinet reshuffle per se, but rather on what the new Cabinet could accomplish. "It is essential for the government to clear the deck and move on with greater unity to accelerate the country's pace in combating polarisation and extremism of all kinds. "The government must give more focus on the country's development such as lowering inflation and deliver better public services, especially for the bottom 40 per cent of the population," he told Bernama. Navaratnam said the government must also work towards giving stability in the rakyat's (people's) quality of life with improved governance that is free from corruption and wastage. The new line-up of Cabinet ministers must work on generating public confidence to protect the ringgit, the budget's integrity and the country's economic fundamentals. The Cabinet reshuffle as announced by Prime Minister Najib Razak Tuesday saw Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi being appointed as the new Deputy Prime Minister, replacing Muhyiddin Yassin, who was dropped. In his speech earlier, Najib said the decision to replace Muhyiddin was a difficult one but it had to be done for the Cabinet to function as one solid and unified team. -- BERNAMA
