North Maluku To Have Shipyard

Ternate, North Maluku, Sept 24 (Antara) - The North Maluku regional administration said it is building a shipyard in the region, marked with the ground breaking ceremony on Tuesday. The shipyard will be built in the coastal village of Domato, in the regency of West Halmahera, Governor Thaib Armaiyn said here. Thaib said construction of the project is expected to be completed in 2014. He said Domato is not a fertile land , therefore, the shipyard would contribute to the economic development of the area. After the shipyard, the plan is to build an international airport, a police school and other facilities, he said. He said the entire development programs are to improve the local people`s welfare, especially if North Maluku and Morotai island will be made a special economic zone. Head of the regional industry and trade service Martinus Djawa said is his report the shipyard project has been planned since 2011. Martinus said development of the project is based on the national policy of the industry ministry to implement the presidential regulation No 32 of 2011 on Master Plan for Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesian Economic Development (MP3EI) in eastern Indonesia for 2011-2015. Under the program, the industry ministry already made East Halmahera as special economic zone and developed ferro-nickel industry through state mining company PT Aneka Tambang in 2012 to be followed with development of shipbuilding industry to start this year, he said.
