BANGKOK, July 22 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports reports that a total of about 41.89 billion baht has been changed hands during the latest five-day long holiday, when people traveled to make merits and have a reunion with their families for the annual Buddhist Lent Eve and the beginning of this year's three-month Buddhist Lent. Thai Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkura told journalists on July 21, citing statistics from her ministry's Department of Tourism, that the total public spending during the July 16-20 holidays was a 10 per cent year-on-year increase. Kobkarn said about 22.90 billion baht, out of the total spending of 41.89 billion baht, was spent by foreign visitors, a 3 per cent year-on-year increase, while the rest was spent by Thais, a 15 per cent year-on-year increase. Kobkarn noted that there were as high as 2.7 million international travelers across Thailand during the five-day holiday, a 11.9 per cent year-on-year rise. According to the minister, most Thai people traveled in the central and the northeastern regions, where there were events and merit makings marking the Buddhist Lent Eve and the beginning of the Buddhist Lent 2016 in almost all areas, especially in Bangkok, Chon Buri, Nakhon Ratchasima, Ayutthaya, Kanchanburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Suphanburi and Lopburi, as well as even Songkhla Province in the Thai Far South. The minister voiced her confidence that tourism campaigns aimed to stimulate the domestic tourism would be fruitful, thanks to several renowned tourist destinations throughout the country. (TNA)
