People to be explained on new deep-sea port in Thai South

SATUN, July 26 (TNA) - As a plan to develop new Pak Bara deep-sea port in Satun Province in the Thai South has been delayed due to opposition by local people, Chula Sukmanop, Director-General of the Marine Department, under the Thai Ministry of Transport, says that his department's officials will explain to the locals how important the port is. Chula told journalists on Saturday (Jul 26) that his officials will inform local people that the new deep–sea port project will have only light industries built around it, while the port can generate more income for them and further develop the southern province. Chula noted that the Thai army-led National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has attached importance on building a port on the country's southern Andaman coastline and Pak Bara deep sea port should become a gateway in exporting goods to India and Europe. If approved by local people, the development of Pak Bara deep-sea port should be started around 2016–2017 with investment of over 10 billion baht and completed within four years. According to the senior official, both rail and road systems would be built and connected to the new port in order to facilitate loading and unloading goods. On a plan to develop Songkhla port 2, which is on the Gulf of Thailand, Chula stated that the development should be carried out simultaneously with that of Pak Bara deep-sea port, as the use of Songkhla port 1 is now at full capacity. Rail and road systems would be constructed to connect the two ports, as shippers would mostly switch to use them to shorten their marine goods transport route through the Malacca Strait and to save their costs.
