Petronas Launches Water For Life Project In Juba, South Sudan

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 (Bernama) – Petronas subsidiary, Petronas Carigali Nile Ltd, has launched the first phase of its Water for Life project in Juba, South Sudan. In a statement Friday, Petronas said the project in Block 4 Gudele West was in partnership with South Sudan’s Petroleum Ministry and Nile Hope, a South Sudan non-governmental organisation. The objective is to provide sufficient and accessible quality water to the local community. Petronas executive vice president and chief executive officer, Upstream, Mohd Anuar Taib said: “As a responsible corporate citizen, we are looking forward to co-developing sustainable community-based programmes for the people of South Sudan. “This is the first of our Water for Life projects in South Sudan. We will be extending the same project to four other locations in Juba. When all the projects are up and running, we hope these will provide enough clean water to approximately 40,000 people.” The launch, held on Sept 11, 2018 was officiated by Sudan’s Minister of Petroleum, Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth with Mohd Anuar also present. The initiative is part of Petronas’ corporate social responsibility commitment which emphasises community well-being and development through increasing awareness of health, sanitation, and safety, improving the quality of healthcare, as well as providing access to clean water. Other programmes being carried out by Petronas in South Sudan include the Petronas Education Sponsorship Programme (PESP), Public Surgical Campaign, school refurbishment and upgrading, and community development programme through its joint operating companies. In addition, on Sept 10, Petronas and its partners also marked a key milestone in South Sudan, when Petronas Carigali Nile Ltd signed an exploration, production and sharing agreement (EPSA) and Transitional Agreement extension for Blocks 1, 2 and 4 with the government of South Sudan. -- BERNAMA
