Qatar Looks to Invest QR 70 Billion in Water and Electricity by 2021

Doha , April 22 (QNA) - Developmental plans in Qatar for expansion of electricity and water networks, electricity generation and water production from 2011 to 2021 are worth around QR 70 billion, HE the Minister of Energy and Industry Dr. Mohamed bin Saleh Al Sada said Sunday. HE the Minister, who was speaking at the opening session of the 10th GCC Water Conference, said that the Ministry, represented in Kahramaa, worked for developing the water sector, in order to meet the ever-growing demand. He estimated the investments required for upgrading water networks over the next 10 years at QR22 billion. As for the electricity sector, HE the Minister estimated that QR 30 billion will be needed over the same period. Al Sada added that Kahramaa had signed around 20 projects in the water and electricity sectors, noting that the company will make a number of announcement regarding its infrastructure in the future. HE the Minister called for analyzing the GCC's agricultural and industrial needs, stressing that investment in agriculture must take into account the dry nature of the region. Al Sada added that the same applies to the industrial sector, since it was one of the sectors that relied heavily on water. HE the Minister of Energy and Industry stressed that drinking water in the GCC was subjected to the highest health standards in the world. Al Sada also called on working on new ways for the maintenance of water networks in order to continue grade A service to the consumers. HE the Minister also said he looks forward to advancing GCC relations in terms of scientific research that would develop water circulation technologies. HE the Minister said that, in a show of understanding of those issues, the State of Qatar has decided to invest in the Barzan Gas Project to satisfy the local energy demand in the future. (QNA)
