Rosatom may invite Chinese firm to nuclear plant construction

MOSCOW, December 5. /TASS/. Russian nuclear power corporation Rosatom may invite China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) to the construction of a nuclear power plant in the Kursk Region, according to a protocol of consultations between Rosatom and CNNC seen by PRIME on Friday. “Taking into account sustainable nuclear power development in China, as well as a significant increase in production of equipment and level of construction and installation works in China, the Russian side expressed readiness to consider the possibility of inviting Chinese enterprises managed by CNNC to take part in building VVER-reactors in Russia, for instance, at the Kurskaya nuclear plant, and in third countries,” the protocol said. CNNC said it was not so far commenting on nuclear power cooperation with Russia. Rosatom is currently building a new nuclear plant to substitute the existing Kurskaya nuclear plant consisting of four 1,000-megawatt units, which has been in operation since 1976. In July, Rosatom’s international arm Rusatom Overseas and CNNC New Energy signed a memorandum for construction of floating nuclear plants. China is interested in floating plants first of all to ensure island territories and offshore hydrocarbon fields. Moreover, Rosatom built two units of the Tianwan nuclear plant in China and signed a contract for construction of two more units at the facility. Read more
