Rosatom to sign general agreement on construction of new nuclear blocks in India in early 2016

MOSCOW, December 28. /TASS/. Russia’s national nuclear corporation Rosatom plans to sign a general framework agreement on construction of 5th and 6th blocks of Kudankulam nuclear plant in India at the beginning of 2016, a source in the company said on Monday. "We plan to sign a general framework agreement on construction of 5th and 6th blocks in India at the beginning of 2016," the source said. Russia is building the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in India under the 1988 inter-governmental agreement and the 1998 addition to it. The first power unit for the Kudankulam NPP, which was built with Rosatom participation, has already been commissioned. Construction of the second power unit is over too. Construction of the third and fourth power units is expected to be started in 2016 to be completed by 2020-2021. All in all, Russia plans to build up to 16 reactors in various regions of India. In December 2015, Rosatom signed a program of manufacturing localization in India for Russia-designed nuclear power plans. As Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier an agreement has been reached on providing one more site for construction of Russia-designed energy blocks by the Indian side. Read more
