Russia, China ready to sign documents on construction of two new power units of Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant

MOSCOW, November 8. /TASS/. Moscow and Beijing may soon sign an intergovernmental protocol on the construction of two new power units of the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant in China, Russia’s Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation said in a statement following Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev’s meeting with his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang. "The heads of government support bilateral cooperation in building two new Russian-designed reactors at the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant site, plan to timely prepare an intergovernmental protocol on this project and are willing to facilitate drawing up relevant contracts," the statement reads. Russia and China have been building up cooperation in the nuclear sphere for many years. In 2007, the first two reactors of the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant were put into service. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) considers this power plant to be one of the most secure in the world. At present, two more reactors at the Tianwan Nuclear site are under construction and they are scheduled to begin operations in 2018. In 2011, the China Experimental Fast Reactor (CEFR), built with the Russian specialists’ assistance, was put into operation, the same year the fourth part of the gas centrifuge plant constructed with Russia’s assistance put into operation.
