Russia to construct nuclear plant in Vietnam despite rescheduling of construction launch - First Deputy PM

HANOI, December 16. /TASS/. Russia will continue to participate in the project of creating the first ever nuclear power plant in Vietnam in the Ninh Thuan province despite rescheduling of the construction's launch, Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov told TASS on Wednesday. "The Vietnamese government confirms that it’s still interested in cooperation with the Russian Federation regarding the issue and the Ninh Thuan 1 nuclear power project will happen," he said. According to Shuvalov, his Vietnamese colleague Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai told him in negotiating that the timeline of the project’s implementation may be further rescheduled due to internal matters. "For Vietnam this is a very challenging project as everyone remembers the Fukushima tragedy. Currently, the issues of ensuring safety for people when constructing a nuclear plant are being considered very thoroughly so we’ve agreed that experts from Rosatom, which is Vietnam’s partner in the project, will be working not only in their main area of constructing the plant but will also help in explanatory work," Shuvalov said. Russian experts will particularly aide within hearings in the country’s National Assembly (parliament), First Deputy PM said, "regarding how secure modern nuclear technologies are in general and how much Russian technologies are better than those of other countries, which also intend to participate in construction of nuclear sites in Vietnam, for example, Japan."
