Russia-Mexico trade reaches $1.5 bln in January-June 2015 - Russian ambassador

MEXICO CITY, December 1. /TASS/. Trade between Russia and Mexico in January-June 2015 reached 1.5 billion U.S. dollars, Russian Ambassador to Mexico Eduard Malayan said at a news conference on Monday. However cooperation potential was "much bigger." "Our trade and economic relations are expanding," he said. "In the first six months of this year alone, our trade reached 1.5 billion U.S. dollars. This cooperation has a tendency of further growth, including through increased exports of Mexican foods." Tourist flow from Russia to Mexico is demonstrating upwards tendencies, too. "The biggest figure was registered last winter, when about 140,000 Russians visited Mexico," he said. "Now however this growth has slowed down due to crisis phenomena." The Russian diplomat noted that the two countries had "good plans for the perspective." "Contacts at a high political level are not excluded," Malayan said, adding that a Russian film festival in Mexico was scheduled for late February 2016. In his words, the Russian-Mexican intergovernmental commission on cooperation was expected to hold a meeting in the spring 2016, the first one since December 2011. The two countries, in his words, were working on an agreement on cooperation in space exploration. "This document will open up new horizons for us," the Russian ambassador said. "Our relations are steadily developing in all spheres, at the political level, in economy, in the area of culture, tourism, and the humanities. There are practically no spheres where we have no cooperation." Russia and Mexico are marking the 125th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2015. This week, the Days of Russia will be held at the Mexican National Congress’ Senate. A Russian parliamentary delegation will take part in the event. The delegation will be led by deputy speaker of the Federation Council, or upper house of the Russian parliament, Yevgeny Bushmin. Apart from that, a photo exhibition dedicated to the anniversary will be opened at the National Archives. A number of other cultural events are also planned. Read more
