Sadao Checkpoint in Thai South to be opened 24 hours

BANGKOK, May 15 (TNA) - Thailand will extend the opening of its Sadao Checkpoint in the southern Songkhla Province, bordering Malaysia, to 24 hours as of mid-June 2019. Spokesman to the Thai deputy prime minister for economic affairs Nattaporn Jatusripitak told journalists that the Thai Cabinet, at its regular meeting this week, approved a plan on the opening of the Sadao Checkpoint around the clock, as proposed by the National Security Council (NSC). "Based on the Cabinet's resolution, the Sadao Checkpoint will be first opened 24 hours for a three-month trial basis, starting from June 17", said the spokesman. The spokesman stated that during the three-month trial period, only trucks and trailers carrying goods or parcels with a driver and another passenger will be each allowed to pass through the Sadao Checkpoint. According to the spokesman, local authorities in Songkhla have been assigned, in the meantime, to launch public campaigns on the 24-hour opening of the Sadao Checkpoint, a major border pass and border trade area between Thailand and neighboring Malaysia in the ASEAN Community (AC).
