SK Telecom, KT boast latest network tech at World IT Show

SEOUL, May 24 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's top mobile carrier SK Telecom Co. and its smaller rival KT Corp. on Wednesday showcased their latest solutions at an information technology convention, focusing on the fifth-generation network and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. During the World IT Show 2017, which kicked off in Seoul, SK Telecom featured technologies for self-driving automobiles connected to the 5G network. It also showcased AI services that can help users throughout their everyday lives and provide Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. IoT is a concept in which objects are connected to the Internet and can identify themselves to other devices in order to exchange necessary data for improved efficiency and convenience. It is considered as one of the new growth engines for mobile carriers. KT also showcased the Connected mode Discontinuous Reception (C-DRX) technology, which allows users to save battery when using smartphones. While smartphones had to continuously communicate with signal stations, the technology minimized such procedures, leading to power efficiency. The tech fair, which runs through Saturday, has attracted some 500 businesses from 57 countries around the world. colin@yna.co.kr (END)
