South Korea Seeks Further Collaboration With Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 (Bernama) -- South Korea is seeking to collaborate further with Malaysia under its New Southern Policy for the benefit of both countries, said its Ambassador to Malaysia, Dr Toh Kyung Hwan. He said the policy, unveiled in November last year by President Moon Jae-in, matches the Look East Policy of Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad. “Malaysia has many qualified, highly-skilled workers compared with its neighbouring countries, and we can work together in various areas such as rail transportation, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, smart cities, and biotechnology,” he told reporters after officiating a seminar, entitled Rail Transportation – Sharing The Experiences of Seoul Metro (Korea) and Transport Metropolitan de Barcelona (TMB) (Spain), here Thursday. The seminar was organised by the Malay Consultative Council (MPM) and the Korean Urban Rail Association. Toh also expressed hope that closer government-to-government ties could be formed between his country’s Ministry of Land, Transportation and Infrastructure and Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport. “I have met Minister Anthony Loke last week to seek further cooperation. The two ministries will hold a transportation cooperation meeting, at vice-minister level, in August. Many details will be discussed in the meeting,” said Toh. Meanwhile, MPM Secretary-General Professor Dr Hasan Mad said the seminar today aimed to gather local industry players in the rail-related industry to network and consider forming collaborations with South Korea and Spain. This would prepare them for projects such as the Light Rail Transit 3, Mass Rapid Transit 2 and the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail (HSR) when they come along. “There is much technology sharing that local players could gain from involving signalling, track-works, rolling stock (locomotives, railroad cars, coaches, and wagons), telecommunications and ticketing systems,” Hasan noted. -- BERNAMA
