The State of Qatar Chairs TRIMs Meeting at WTO Headquarters in Geneva

Geneva, June 01 (QNA) - The State of Qatar chaired Friday the meeting of Agreement on Trade-Related Investment Measures (TRIMs) of the World Trade Organization (WTO) today at the organization's headquarters in Geneva. The meeting, chaired by HE Representative of the Ministry of Economy and Trade at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva Sheikh Ali Bin Al Waleed Al-Thani, focused on a number of topics related to international trade and investment, as well as comments by some member states on investment policies and legislation. The member states participating in this meeting also expressed appreciation for the active role played by the State of Qatar during its chairmanship of the Committee in facilitating its work and in addressing and completing the issues on its agenda. TRIMs, negotiated during the Uruguay Round, and apply only to measures that affect trade in goods. Recognizing that certain investment measures can have trade-restrictive and distorting effects, it states that no Member shall apply a measure that is prohibited by the provisions of GATT Article III (national treatment) or Article XI (quantitative restrictions). The State of Qatar took over the chairmanship of the Committee on Trade and Investment last year in the first session in which Qatar chairs a committee in the World Trade Organization. (QNA)
