Tehran-Tokyo To Conduct Tissue Engineering Projects

Tehran, Sept 2, IRNA -- Iranian and Japanese tissue engineers will jointly conduct research on growing human organs, an official said. Tuesday edition of the English language newspaper Iran Daily quotes Hamid Gourabi, president of Royan Institute, as saying that investigators at Isfahan’s Biotechnology Research Center and Tehranˈs Stem Cell Research Center are planning to implement the project. Tissue engineering is the science of growing replacement organs and tissue in the lab to replace damaged or diseased tissue. The process usually starts with a three-dimensional structure that is used to support cells as they grow and develop. Skin, blood vessels, bladders, trachea, esophagus, muscle and other types of tissue have been successfully engineered and some of these tissues have already been used in treating human diseases./end
