Telenor Eyes Increase In Subscriber Base In Asia

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- Norway's Telenor Group expects to increase its mobile Internet subscriber base in Asia to 45 million by year-end, representing an increase of about 64 per cent year-on-year. Group executive vice-president/head of Asia operations, Sigve Brekke, said when the target was attained, roughly one-third of the group's user base of 160 million in the region would be Internet-enabled. "Currently, less than 20 per cent of Telenor's markets in Asia are active mobile data users, so this would be a marked jump, an encouraging step towards widespread Internet access," he said. Brekke said this during his presentation at the KL Converge, a multi-platform conference and exhibition on digital content and creative industry. He said the company's Internet-for-all strategy aimed to capture significant revenue and growth potential in the region. "Our projections may be ambitious but we're well-positioned to continue rolling out mobile Internet services to all our Asia markets over the long term," he said. Brekke said Malaysia would be the among the group's biggest markets for mobile Internet-related growth going forward, along with India and Bangladesh. Telenor is the parent company of DiGi Telecommunications Bhd. -- BERNAMA
