Telkom-Telstra To Form Joint Venture In Cloud Computing Business

Jakarta, Aug 29 (Antara) - PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk (Telkom) said it will form a joint venture with Australian telecommunication operator Telstra Corporation Limited (Telstra) to operate in cloud computing business in Southeast Asia and Indonesia. "I will leave for Australia to meet Telstra leaders to discuss business in cloud computing, Arief Yahya, the president of the state telecommunications company said here on Friday. Arief said Telkom wants to team up with Telstra as the Australian company has skills in cloud computing business. "We want to be part of global telecommunication systems, therefor we have to cooperate with big players," he said. Telkom and Telstra already signed an agreement to establish a joint venture company based in Indonesia in January, 2014. The joint venture company is expected to have subscribers among Australian companies and other companies operating in this region including Indonesia offering Network applications and services (NAS). Telkom already entered the market of information technology in Australia through its subsidiary PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia International (Telin) and Australian Telcom. Telin plans to strengthen Business Process Outsourcing in Australia by acquiring 75 percent stake in a local company at a price of US$8 million. Telin has also joined a consortium of seven global telecommunications companies to build and operate a new submarine cable system that directly connects Southeast Asia and the United States with NEC Corporation as the system supplier. Other members of the Southeast Asia - United States "SEA-US" consortium are Globe Telecom, RAM Telecom International (RTI), Hawaiian Telcom, Teleguam Holdings (GTA), GTI Corporation (a member of the Globe Telecom group of companies) and Telkom USA. "The SEA-US project is connected seamlessly with Telkom`s Domestic Backbone, and the cable will provide unmatched latency from Indonesia to the United States," Arief said earlier. The project is contributed to boosting Indonesia`s economic growth and support the government`s Master Plan for Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesia`s Economic Development (MP3EI). "We began pursuing SEA-US in 2013 and are very proud to be a part of this historic project that marks the first gateway from the eastern part of Indonesia to the world." he was quoted as saying on Thursday. He said Telkom wants to make Indonesia an internet hub for Asia as it has the potentials. So far the internet traffic hubs in Asia have been in Singapore, Hong Kong, or Japan. "The sea cable communications system will have a stable connectivity and would become the only sea cable system that links Southeast Asia and the United States with a route safe from areas prone earthquake in East Asia," Arief said. The 15,000 kilometer infrastructure would be the first submarine cable project that links eastern Indonesia and the United States . It would be connected with the infrastructure of Telkom that it could provide the lowest latency from Indonesia to the United States compared with other existing international sea cable system," Arif said. When it started operation in 2016, the SEA-US cable system , through connections with the submarine cable of Indonesia Global Gateway (Manado-Dumai), would be integrated with the the cables of SEA-ME-WE 5 which is owned by Telin , Asia America Gateway (AAG), South East Asia Japan Cable System (SJC), and the Batam Singapore Cable System (BSCS), Dumai Malaka Cable System (DMSC), Thailand-Indonesia-Singapore (TIS) and other domestic cable systems.
