Thai baht slightly affected by China’s yuan depreciation

BANGKOK, May 26 (TNA) - The Bank of Thailand (BOT) says that the weakening Chinese yuan has slightly affected the Thai baht. BOT Assistant Governor Chantavarn Sucharitakul told journalists on Thursday that China's yuan depreciation this month is a normal practice and in line with the regional currencies, following an earlier appreciation of the US dollar. On May 16, the People’s Bank of China depreciated the reference value of yuan to 6.5343 a US dollar, compared to 6.5246 on May 13, representing 97 basis points or 1.50 per cent, the lowest since March 3, aimed at maintaining the competitiveness of the Chinese currency on the global market amid declining world trade.
