Thai employers asked to send info of migrant workers

BANGKOK, November 7 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Labour has asked local employers to forward information of their migrant employees in order to speed up the process of nationality verification of their workers. Pichit Nilthongkham, Director of the Department of Employment’s Office of Foreign Workers Administration, under the Ministry of Labour, made the request on Friday, saying that information of migrant workers is being compiled,after legal registrations of migrant workers and their followers, including those from Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, ended late last month. Pichit stated that information on nationality verification of some 6,000 Cambodian workers have been compiled and concerned officials are urgently compiled information on Myanmar and Lao migrant workers. According to the senior official, Laos has been requested to dispatch a team of officials to help their Thai counterparts in the ongoing nationality verification process of Lao workers. About 1.5 million migrant workers and their followers from the three neighbouring countries have been registered with the Thai Ministry of Labour, some 50,000 of whom are employed in the local fishery industry. Meanwhile, Labour Minister General Surasak Kanchanarat told journalists that the deadline for migrant workers to undertake the nationality verification is March 31, 2015, with those failing to do so to be sent back to their home countries.(TNA)
