Thai exporters urged to ship more products to Indonesia

BANGKOK, September 13 (TNA) - Thai exporters have been urged to increase their shipments to the Indonesian market, as Indonesia's newly-elected President Joko Widodo concentrates on stimulating the national economy and speeding up amending trade and investment laws to facilitate foreign investors. Ampawan Pichalai, Director of the Ministry of Commerce’s Trade Policy and Strategy Office, made the suggestion on Saturday, saying that Widodo’s plans to boost the Indonesian economy, improve basic infrastructure and amend trade and investment laws will give an opportunity for Thai exporters to export more goods to Indonesia, a fellow member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Ampawan pointed out that the Indonesian economy, with its total population of about 248 million and abundant oil and gas reserves, is now ranked number one in ASEAN. According to the senior official, Indonesia is developing several industries, including automobile, electronics, textile and fishery, but Indonesian upstream and midstream industries are still not too strong and it is a good opportunity for Thailand to export more auto parts to the Indonesia, after China has steadily relocated production base to the Thai Kingdom. As Japan also wants to promote Thailand as a regional hub for research and development (R&D), the senior official recommended that Thai investors use Indonesia as their production base for manufacturing low-cost products to enable them to compete on the world market.
