Thai exports to improve after upgrade in TIP report

BANGKOK, July 3 (TNA) - Thailand’s exports are expected to improve after the United States upgraded the kingdom from Tier 3, the lowest ranking, to the Tier 2 Watch List in the US Department of State's Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report said Malee Choklumlerd, director-general International Trade Promotion Department. She said the Tier 2 Watch List ranking showed the success of the Thai government in suppressing human trafficking and forced labour, especially in seafood industry sector. Although the ranking has improved, the Thai government and the Commerce Ministry are determined to continue suppressing human trafficking problem for security and humanitarian purposes, she said, adding that the ranking would be further improved in future. Mrs. Malee said the improvement in the ranking would be a boon to Thai products in the US and other countries as well as it would help boost consumer confidence. Moreover, it would be positive for the current investigation by the European Union (EU) on Thailand’s efforts to solve the illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing issue. Thailand receives a “yellow card” warning from the EU more than a year ago. (TNA)
