Thai government mulls to impose VAT on foreign e-businesses

BANGKOK, July 18 (TNA) - The government, through the Ministry of Finance, plans to impose the value-added tax (VAT) on e-businesses in Thailand operated by foreign firms. Government Spokesman Lieutenant General Sansern Kaewkamnerd told journalists of the plan on July 17, saying that the Thai Cabinet, thus, gave the green light in principle at its weekly meeting at Bangkok's Government House earlier in the day for the amendment of the VAT law to cover the e-businesses run by foreign operators, as proposed by the Ministry of Finance. The spokesman stated that under the amended VAT bill, once promulgated, foreign operators who run e-businesses in Thailand, including those selling their products in the country through the e-commerce system and those owning platforms for the e-commerce in the country, namely Google and Amazon, will be legally-required to establish their agent offices in the Thai economy and register for the VAT payment to the Thai government. "The move is in accordance with the international practice although, like other countries, there may be some technical enforcement problems that need to be addressed in the future because the e-businesses are based in foreign economies, but there is a need in principle to amend the Thai VAT law first", the spokesman quoted Finance Minister Apisak Tantivorawong as mentioning.
