Thai PM calls for concrete tourism promotion

BANGKOK, November 25 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha has ordered relevant officials to concretely promote domestic tourism, as the sector is effectively supporting the national economy. Government Spokesman Major General Sansern Kaewkamnerd told journalists on Wednesday that the prime minister placed the order during the Cabinet's weekly meeting on November 24, after the meeting was informed that Thailand has welcomed up to 29.5 million international visitors so far this year, exceeding an earlier target of 28.8 million for 2015 and last year's figure of 24.7 million. The spokesman stressed that the prime minister has instructed relevant agencies to concretely implement tourism promotional projects, including the construction of new marinas in Phuket Province, the conservation of coastal areas and the promotion of adventurous tourist activities. The spokesman stated that the Thai government will also find additional ways to assist local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), together with commercial banks’ loans. According to the spokesman, the government will gather information on newly revived SMEs so that it will further work out additional assistance for them. Besides, the Thai government will form working groups to discuss recommendations and reservations on its mega-projects with academics and activists to prevent protests during project implementations in the future.
