Thai PM to push for special economic zones

BANGKOK, August 12 (TNA) -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha confirmed that the special economic zone project of his government would not have a negative impact on local residents but would create jobs for them, so the government would implement it. Denying the rumor that his government would review the special economic development project, Gen Prayut said that apart from privileges for investors, the development of special economic zones would also promote local businesses including small and medium enterprises. Local operators could seek support from the government for their business expansion in the special economic zones, he said. Special economic zones at border provinces could also employ alien workers and thus help prevent them from entering urban areas, the prime minister said. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said the Board of Investment and the Interior Ministry would next week discuss industries, town planning and promotional privileges in special economic zones.
