Thai state auditors reopen GT200 case

BANGKOK, June 21 (TNA) - The Office of the Auditor General of Thailand (OAGT) plans to reopen a case concerning fake GT200 bomb detectors and to axe Thai dealers who may face money-laundering charges. Auditor General Pisit Leelavachiropas told journalists of the plan on June 20, saying that his office will also evaluate damages of government agencies buying the products, after a British court has ordered compensation for buying countries. Pisit revealed his office will check information on the companies that were dealers in Thailand as they might violate anti-money laundering laws and will then send the case to the Centre for National Anti-Corruption and the Anti-Money Laundering Office. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan said that the Thai Cabinet has already ordered state officers to stop using GT200 products and he is waiting for recommendations from relevant agencies on what the Thai government should do. "Initially the devices worked and the Royal Thai Air Force was the first agency to use them. The Office of the Auditor General can investigate the procurement, but past purchase complied with the procurement regulations of the Prime Minister's Office and was considered by committees at stages, the deputy premier explained.
