Thailand’s e-commerce sales top THB2.5 trillion in 2016

BANGKOK, March 12 (TNA) – Thailand’s e-commerce sales reached 2.52 trillion baht, accounting for 40 per cent of total sales in 2016, according to the Ministry of Commerce. Banjongjit Angsu-Singh, director-general of the Ministry’s Department of Business Development (DBD), said the data from the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (Public Organization) showed that there were a total of 527,324 people running e-commerce business in Thailand last year. Nonetheless, the department found that as of Feb. 28, only 21,167 entrepreneurs registered their online businesses with the authorities, she added. In order to facilitate the registration process, the DBD is amending its regulations and revamping the system. Banjongjit expects the department will launch e-registration for e-commerce businesses in mid-2017. In addition, the DBD is collaborating with relevant agencies to develop plans for the development of e-commerce business and the prevention of online trading scams in the country, she said. (TNA)
