Thailand bars imports of coconuts Aug-Oct 2018

BANGKOK, July 18 (TNA) - In an attempt to prop up the price of coconuts on the domestic market and to assist local growers, the Thai Cabinet has resolved to bar imports of coconuts for a short period of three months, from August to October 2018. Government Spokesman Lieutenant General Sansern Kaewkamnerd told journalists that the Thai Cabinet made the decision at its weekly meeting at Bangkok's Government House on July 17, as proposed by a government committee tasked with overseeing the situation of oil crops and vegetable oil. The spokesman stated that the three-month suspension of imported cocunuts is aimed to reduce the supply of cocunuts in order to maintain or boost their price on the domestic market, from only 5.96 baht per kilogram on average last month when compared to 13 baht per kilogram in early this year. According to the spokesman, the cocunut produce in Thailand this year, which is expected to come out during August-October as previous years, is projected to stand at about 860,000 tons per rai (2.5 rai = 1 acre), a 3.27 per cent year-on-year increase, while the market demand this year is likely to stand at about 1.1 million tons totally, a 22.05 per cent year-on-year drop. "There has been no problem of pest outbreaks in coconut growing areas in Thailand this year, resulting in more produce of cocunuts in the country", said the spokesman. (TNA)
