Thailand to be world first producer of Green ABS luggage

BANGKOK, February 24 (TNA) - Thailand plans to produce traveling luggage made from the mixture of plastic pellets and natural rubber for the first time in the world, which will also help boost rubber prices. IRPC Public Company Limited (IRPC) agreed on Wednesday to cooperate with other private firms to jointly produce the world-modeled luggage, made from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) pellets and nature rubber at their suitable proportions. IRPC Managing Director Sukrit Surabotsophon said that such the mixture of ABS plastic pellets and natural rubber, called Green ABS, becomes a new raw material which can substitute synthetic rubber by 10-40 per cent without any change in the durable and robust property of synthetic rubber. Sukrit noted that IRPC is now the world's first producer of luggage made from Green ABS, based on the company's concept and policy on research and development projects on innovative products which are environmentally-friendly to meet customers' demand and global megatrend, while also adding the value of products. Sukrit pointed out that more use of Green ABS will help boost demand for natural rubber and, thus, assist local rubber growers to earn more income. According to the IRPC managing director, his company now produces about 177,000 tonnes of ABS plastic pellets annually and 6,400 tonnes of Green ABS pellets yearly, which requires about 130,000 kilogrammes of natural rubber annually, equivalent to about 500 rai-rubber growing areas (2.5 rais=1 acre). Meanwhile, Dr. Pailin Chuchottaworn, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and President of PTT Public Company Limited (PTT), who is also IRPC President, told journalists that PTT, Thailand's largest petroleum firm, supports research and development projects on value-added and green products, especially those on local farm products, namely natural rubber.
