Thailand to become digital economy

BANGKOK, October 29 (TNA) - The Thai government is applying information technology (IT) to develop the Kingdom into a digital economy and laying new economic foundation through adjusted promotional privileges for international investors. Deputy Prime Minister MR Pridiyathorn Devakula, who supervises national economic affairs, told the government's policy at a seminar on Thailand's strategies based on new economic foundation, held in Bangkok on Wednesday. MR Pridiyathorn said that the Thai government will draft new bills to support the digital economy, concerning the application of IT to support local businesses, trade, education and other areas of work. MR Pridiyathorn explained that a national committee on digital economy will be formed by the end of this year, tasked with spending 12 months to lay the foundation of Thailand's digital economy for the next government. MR Pridiyathorn noted that the Thai government is also preparing several measures to create new investment projects in the country, including incentives to attract transnational companies to set up their headquarters in Thailand to facilitate and connect their businesses in the region, as well as tax exemption for resale-oriented imports and extended visa periods for business operators. The deputy premier acknowledged that he plans to propose 15-16 such measures to the Cabinet for its further consideration within three weeks. Besides, the Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI) will increasingly channel its promotional privileges to Thai investment projects overseas. According to the deputy premier, Thai exports have been in the same direction of the global economy and have not shown the Thai economy is facing any problem. (TNA)
