Thailand exported 2.85 million tons of rice in Q1

BANGKOK, April 29 (TNA) -- Thailand exported 2.85 million tons of rice from January to March this year, rising 34% year-on-year, the Thai Rice Exporters Association reported on April 29. The export value amounted to 44.04 billion baht or US$1.23 billion, growing 23% year-on-year. In the first quarter of last year, Thailand exported 2.12 million tons of rice worth 35.77 billion baht or US$1.10 billion. In the first three months of this year, the five biggest importers of Thai rice were Indonesia importing 317,100 tons (up 877% year-on-year), Ivory Coast with 272,354 tons (86%), Benin with 266,246 tons (426%), China with 257,708 tons (86%), and Cameroon with 191,846 tons (251%). In March Thailand exported 990,864 tons of rice worth 15.16 billion baht, rising 26% by volume and 17% by value year-on-year, and 18% by volume and 14% by value compared with February this year. The association expects the rice export volume at 700,000-750,000 tons in April because of several holidays in the month. It said that when government-to-government rice deals were excluded, Thai rice export in normal markets had not recovered significantly due to continuously weak purchasing power in African countries.
