Thailand eyes better "doing business ranking"

BANGKOK, April 19 (TNA) - Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak, who oversees economic affairs, expresses his confidence in Thailand's better doing business ranking on the global board over the next couple of years. Voicing the confidence on April 18, Somkid told journalists that Thailand could move forward in the global ranking due to close cooperation between the public and the private sectors. Somkid pointed out that close cooperation between 12 groups of the "Pracharat" Committee with the private sector could help develop Thailand further. Presently, the deputy premier noted, Thailand's development progress is seen in the domestic agricultural and education sectors, while significant business laws have also been amended to facilitate business operators. "If business laws are successfully amended within two years, Thailand’s now 49th place in the global ranking of doing business could move up to stay within the first 20 places, beneficial to the country in the long run", the deputy premier assessed. The "Pracharat Committee", or "state of the people" panel, has been set up, aimed to move Thailand forward and reduce disparities, while also enhancing national competitiveness. According to the US-based World Bank, Singapore has maintained it top position in the “Doing Business 2016:Measuring Quality and Efficiency” survey of 189 economies worldwide. Thailand's 49th place gives it the third position among fellow member countries in ASEAN Community (AC), behind Singapore and Malaysia (18th), but only the three ASEAN countries are ranked among the world's top 50 performers for the ease of doing business.
