Thailand to hold FTA negotiations with Pakistan

BANGKOK, July 29 (TNA) - The Thai Cabinet has approved free trade area (FTA) negotiations with Pakistan and concerned authorities will start the talks in the near future. Deputy Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn told journalists on Wednesday that the first Pakistani-Thai FTA meeting will be officially held in September 2015 and both countries are expected to seal their FTA deal by mid 2017. Apiradi also revealed that Thai Commerce Minister General Chatchai Sarikulya is scheduled to visit Pakistan from August 12-13 for the 3rd meeting of the Pakistani-Thai Joint Trade Commission. The deputy minister noted that the upcoming meeting will focus on mutually benefiting trade in gems, jewellery, food, farm and fishing products, automobiles and parts and textile, pointing out that Pakistan is an important source of gems and fishing products for Thailand. According to the deputy minister, both Pakistan and Thailand plan to raise the value of bilateral trade to 2 billion US dollars by 2018. (TNA)
