Thailand to hold FTA talks with Turkey

BANGKOK, July 29 (TNA) - The Thai Cabinet has approved free trade area (FTA) negotiations with Turkey, a potential market with high purchasing power for Thai exporters. Deputy Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn told journalists on Wednesday that the first FTA negotiation between Turkey and Thailand will be held in September 2015, with their FTA deal expected to be concluded in late 2016. Apiradi said studies show that an FTA will boost Thailand's gross domestic product (GDP) by 0.03 per cent or 65.9-76.7 million US dollars. Apiradi pointed out that Turkey is a potential market for Thai business operators because its economy is the world's 19th largest and its population stands at about 80 million. According to the deputy minister, Thailand wishes permanent tax incentives from an FTA deal with Ankara, after Turkey has already excluded Thailand from its Generalized System of Preferences (GSP).
