Thailand, Myanmar to double border trade value in 2016

BANGKOK, January 29 (TNA) - Thailand and Myanmar have agreed to double the value of their two-way border trade to about 120 billion baht in 2016. The agreement was reached at a meeting between Thai Commerce Minister General Chatchai Sarikulya and his visiting Myanmar counterpart U Win Myint in Bangkok on January 28. General Chatchai told journalists that the border trade between Thailand and Myanmar accounts for up to about 80 per cent of overall Thai-Myanmar trade. General Chatchai said both sides have also agreed to form a Thai-Myanmar border trade committee and a business council to promote their border trade and support their business operators in developing facilities for wholesale and retail, as well as health, tour and educational services in the connecting special economic zones of Mae Sot in Thailand's northwestern Tak Province and Myanmar's Myawaddy Town. According to the Thai commerce minister, both sides have shared the idea that border trade is important to both countries. The Thai and Myanmar commerce ministers are scheduled to jointly preside over the opening of a trade fair in Tak's Mae Sot District on January 29. After their meeting this time, Thailand will propose a "Mae Sot-Myawaddy Model" strategy to Myanmar to boost border trade and expects concrete progress in the proposal at the next Thai-Myanmar Joint Trade Commission in August 2015.
