Thailand needs more industrial workers

BANGKOK, April 16 (TNA) - The Office of Industrial Economics (OIE), under the Ministry of Industry, says that the Thai industrial sector needs 500,000 more semi-skilled and skilled workers. OIE Director-General Somchai Harnhirun told journalists on Wednesday the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Industry and the OIE have found from their joint study that the Thai industrial sector lacks such workers, especially vocational graduates who are mechanics and electricians. Somchai acknowledged that the problem is now relieved at a certain extent due to a slowdown in the Thai economy, the relocation of labor-intensive industries to neighboring countries and technological application. Somchai predicted that Thailand's labor shortage should be critical again in the second and third quarters of this year when Thai exports should be picking up and local business operators have adapted to domestic political problems and started including the political factor in their business plans. The OIE, together with the Thai Automotive Institute, the Department of Skill Development and the Department of Vocational Education are, meanwhile, joining forces to produce workers for the Thai automobile industry and to provide students with the apprenticeships that suit the demands of the industrial sector.
