Thailand to strengthen trade, investment ties with Russia

BANGKOK, November 24 (TNA) - A Thai delegation of agencies concerned is scheduled to visit Russia from November 26-27 to strengthen bilateral trade and investment ties between Bangkok and Moscow. Thai Deputy Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn told journalists on Monday that she will lead the Thai delegation, comprising of officials of her ministry and other agencies concerned, including the Ministries of Industry, Tourism and Sports, Agriculture and Cooperatives, as well as those of the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) and the Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI), for the two-day visit to Russia to attend the 2nd meeting of the Russian-Thai committee on trade and economic cooperation, aimed to explore ways to double the yearly bilateral trade value between Bangkok and Moscow to about 10 billion US dollars over the next two years. Apiradi said, during the two-day trip, the Thai delegation will also discuss more Thai exports to Russia, namely rice, frozen fresh chicken and fishery products, as Thai factories of chicken exports have already been certified, while the process for the Thai plants of fishery products is being accelerated. Apiradi revealed that, during the meeting, the Thai delegation will also push for bilateral cooperation relating to trade and investment, including that on banking, gems, jewelry, research and development (R&D) and the production of aircraft and parts. Besides, the Thai delegation plans to offer promotional privileges to draw more Russian investment projects into Thailand, including those in the rubber sector in Songkhla Province in the Thai South. From 2009 to 2013, the value of bilateral trade between Thailand and Russia stood at 4.33 billion US dollars annually on average, while that in the first nine months of this year stood at 3.83 billion US dollars, a 10.27 per cent year-on-year increase.
