Thailand to woo more FDI into SEZs

BANGKOK, February 9 (TNA) - The government, through the Ministry of Commerce, will move on solving problems at Thailand's all 10 special economic zones (SEZs) along the border, aimed at attracting more foreign direct investment (FDI) projects into the areas. Adul Chotinisakorn, Deputy Director-General of the ministry's Department of Foreign Trade, told journalists of the move on February 8, noting that several cruxes remain in border provinces where the Thai SEZs are located, namely basic infrastructure development projects are being carried out before they are in good place and his ministry can then fully implement marketing plans to draw more FDI into the areas. Adul said his ministry has already chosen three SEZs which are considered to have higher potential, including those in Songkhla Province in the Thai Far South, Sa Kaeo Province in the Thai East and Tak Province in the Lower Thai North, and a fair, dubbed the Open House, will be organised at Paragon shopping complex in Bangkok on February 29, 2016 to formally declare Thailand's readiness to become a regional investment hub connecting to the rest of the world. Adul revealed that foreign envoys and representatives of chambers of commerce in Thailand will be invited and briefed on privileges international investors are entitled to receive at the Thai SEZs. According to the senior official, the foreign diplomats and the private delegation will then be invited to inspect the Thai SEZ in Sa Kaeo, while special activities will be held during March 1- 2 for Thai and Cambodian investors to form their business networks and other PR campaigns on promoting Thailand's SEZs will also be launched. The senior official pointed out that two-way border trade between Thailand and Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Malaysia in 2015 totaled more than 1.4 trillion baht, a 3.48 per cent year-on-year increase, accounting for 7 per cent of Thailand's total export value, up from 5 per cent previously.
