Toyota recalls 6,200 cars for defective airbags

SEOUL, July 26 (Yonhap) -- Toyota is recalling over 6,200 cars sold in South Korea for defective airbags, the transportation ministry said Tuesday. The recall affects 6,209 units of three vehicle types – the Prius, Prius PHV and Lexus CT200h -- that were produced between Feb. 26, 2009 and April 27, 2012 and sold here by Toyota Korea Co., the local unit of Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor Corp. The cars come with side airbags that deploy in some crashes. But due to some defective parts, the airbag and other components of the airbag may penetrate through the interior of the vehicle, possibly injuring passengers, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said in a press release. The latest recall adds to millions of cars the Japanese automaker was forced to recall globally due to defective airbags produced by Japanese manufacturer Takata. The side airbags were made by a different producer. Free repair services will be available from Aug. 25 at Toyota Korea dealerships. Meanwhile, the ministry said Jaguar Land Rover Korea., the local importer and distributor of Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles, is also recalling 15 cars sold here for defective air bags. The air bags in the vehicles may not deploy even in crashes due to defective parts. Subject to the recall are 15 units of the Land Rover Discovery 4 and Jaguar XJ produced between May 2 and June 3 of this year, according to the ministry. Free repair services will be available from Thursday. bdk@yna.co.kr (END)
