Trade at Cambodian-Thai border sluggish due to election in Cambodia

SA KAEO, July 28 (TNA) - Cross-border trade along the Thai-Cambodian border has become sluggish early Sunday (Jul 28) after eligible Cambodian voters have gone to exercise their rights to cast votes on the general elections day. The key market in Aranyaprathet district bordering Cambodia became quiet after shops operated by Cambodians were closed while some 10,000 Cambodian workers who used to cross the border and work in Thailand daily became thinned as they had also gone to cast ballots at booths which opened from 7.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. Despite the quiet atmosphere, Thai customs officials manning the Aranyaprathet checkpoint and rangers keep their sharp eyes at the border as they expect the market to return active again late afternoon. The general atmosphere in the Cambodian border district of Poipet, opposite Aranyaprathet, was lively with heavy traffic as Cambodians stood in lines to cast ballots at over 50 booths available in the district.
